Schwans Home Delivery

When I was a kid, we went to a lot of family birthday parties.

So many that I can’t remember most of them.

But I do remember many of the parties at my grandmother’s house, and I distinctly remember that Grandma often had ice cream from Schwan’s in her freezer.

I’m not sure what other foods Grandma bought from Schwan’s, but when I got the chance to review their products as part of a Fitfluential campaign, I was happy to do so.

I was even happier to find that Schwan’s sold this:

That’s a 2-pound box of frozen, individually wrapped, wild caught Keta salmon.

Maybe a box of salmon isn’t the most exciting food for some people, but I was STOKED to get this.

First, Keta salmon isn’t available fresh in WNY right now. The only salmon I can get fresh here right now is an organic farm-raised version from Ireland or regular old farm-raised Atlantic salmon. I don’t love either choice; neither is wild-caught, the Atlantic salmon is far more caloric than wild-caught, and the organic is quite expensive.

And I eat salmon 2-3 nights a week.

Second, of all the wild-caught salmon varieties I have tried, Keta is my favorite. It’s not as fatty as King salmon, averaging somewhere around 4-5g of fat per small filet. I am, after all, trying to cut some body fat right now, so while I still eat lots of fat, I don’t want to spend tons of it on my salmon. The Keta salmon tastes great but still fits my macro needs.

Third, I really like the convenience of frozen seafood. I literally grab a filet from the freezer in the morning, toss it in the fridge for the day, and bake or pan cook it for dinner that night. It cooks in 15 minutes (oven) or less (stove top), and it’s great with all kinds of vegetables.

And even if I forget to take it out to defrost, seafood defrosts in less than 20 minutes if you just toss the wrapped filet in a bowl of cool water for a while.

So you kind of can’t go wrong with this stuff.

After trying Schwan’s salmon and deciding I might like to order it again, I was worried that the cost would be prohibitive.

Then I actually looked up the price.

The Schwan’s 2-pound box of salmon is over 20% less pricey than the frozen salmon I normally buy. And even with a nominal home delivery fee, Schwan’s is still less expensive.

Plus it shows up at your door.

No wonder Grandma always used Schwan’s.
