I am a jerk when it comes to pillows.
I have tried just about EVERYTHING when it comes to finding a comfortable pillow.
I have tried stacking two standard fill pillows, a contoured memory foam pillow, a regular memory foam pillow, and finally, one standard pillow on top of a memory foam pillow.
Nothing made me happy.
I still spent 20 minutes every night fussing with position, angle, distance from headboard, and distance from bed edge. Invariably, I would find a spot I liked, get annoyed with it within five minutes, and spend another 20 minutes flipping everything around.
And it’s not as if I sleep in a weird position or toss and turn all night. In fact, once I’m asleep, I really don’t move until close to morning (this is generally when a cat is standing on my hair meowing and rubbing his chin on my head).
I am simply a side sleeper who likes a thicker pillow, and I really only like to sleep on my left side. So when I got the chance to receive a Technogel pillow to review, I was super excited. I literally watched the mail EVERY.DAY from Christmas to New Year’s, waiting for this to arrive:
And I couldn’t wait to sleep on it when it finally got here.
The Technogel pillow required zero fussing on night #1.
And I didn’t have to stack any other pillows with it to achieve my desired thickness.
Since it has a gel layer inside, this pillow feels initially different than other memory foam pillows one may try. On the first night I used the pillow, the pillow actually seemed to get cool — almost cold — after I had been laying on it for a few minutes.
In fact, on that first night, I distinctly remember being curious about the coolness. But I fell asleep minutes after thinking this, and I woke up the next morning thinking was the best pillow ever.
The coolness was there again the next night, but it wasn’t affecting my ability to fall asleep. In fact, the coolness of the gel layer seems to help control temperature. We had some odd temperature fluctuations over the past few weeks — everything from sub-25-degree nights to balmy fifty-degree days. Those changes usually affect my ability to get comfortable at night; if it’s too warm, I toss and turn, and if it’s too cold, I shiver until I’m warm enough to sleep.
I have had none of these issues with the new pillow.
Turns out, the Technogel layer DOES regulate temperature by bringing the surface temperature of whatever has contact with it down by several degrees.
So if you’re prone to getting too warm at night, Technogel seems to have the answer!
In addition to my own testing, David and Davidson have both slept on it. Both man and cat seem to like it just as much as I do.
Despite my habitual pillow problems, here’s the real reason I wanted to try it:
I have been working hard to make sure I get 7-8 hours of sleep every night for about a year now.
I used to try to push myself to just 6 hours a night. 6 hours of sleep made my workouts suffer, and any designs I had of fat loss or muscle gain were compromised by my lack of sleep and the overeating it sometimes inspired.
Oh, and I was kind of mean when I was tired.
In fact, the above nasty-face is the result of a stressful night of just 5 hours of sleep, on the couch no less, where the ONLY good thing about the sleep I got was my Technogel pillow.
These days, 7-8 hours of sleep helps me keep my workouts energized, helps me keep my eating habits in line, and helps me stay motivated to work until 9 PM most nights.
Plus I’m nice.
Unless David tries to sneak onto my pillow when I’m sleeping.
In which case, I can get a little testy.
